Rail Safety Week 2026

10 Aug 2026

Rail Safety Week will be held from Monday 10 to Sunday 16 August 2026, serving as an important reminder to be aware and safe on and around our rail network.

Between 2021 and 2025, there were 30 collisions and 755 near-miss incidents reported in South Australia at level crossings. Sadly, these incidents resulted in 8 lives lost and 4 serious injuries.

Rail incidents don’t just affect you, they devastate families, first responders, and train and tram drivers.

Next time you are around the rail network, make sure you:

  • look up from your phone
  • stay behind the white line
  • remove headphones to listen out for trains
  • look both ways before crossing - a second train can approach quickly from either side
  • be patient – never risk crossing in front of a train
  • only cross the tracks at designated crossings
  • obey all signs and signals
  • dismount from bicycles, scooters or skateboards before crossing as wheels can slip or get stuck in the tracks.

Every rail incident is preventable. Help us work together to create a safer rail network for everyone.
