Trams have returned home

Tram operations have come home

Adelaide’s tram operations are back in public control, completing the State Government’s commitment to safeguard our essential rail services for future generations.

The return of tram services to public hands today, and trains earlier this year, realises a major State Government commitment.

A Government-run tram network will deliver better integrated and coordinated services.

What this means for you

A trained and skilled workforce will deliver a smooth transition for tram customers, with no immediate changes to your current travel arrangements or timetables.

Tram network upgrades

The Government will continue upgrades to the tram network, including safer and more reliable journeys through the Tram Grade Separation Projects.

Network improvements include:

  • Safer and more reliable journeys through the removal of three level crossings where the Glenelg tram line crosses Marion Road and Cross Road, Plympton and Morphett Road, Morphettville.
  • Better connection between the suburbs on either side of the Glenelg tram line through the removal of the level crossings.
  • Rebuilding the South Road tram Overpass to accommodate the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project lowered motorway.
  • Safer and more accessible tram stops with improved pedestrian access and lighting.

Following completion of the Tram Grade Separation Projects, tram services will return to full network operation.

We appreciate the dedication of all our public transport workers serving the South Australian community, and the ongoing support of our customers as we continue to build a public transport system we can all be proud of.
