Gawler rail line closures

From Thursday 1 April 2021 (ongoing)
Modes affected:
Routes affected:

The full Gawler rail line will be temporarily closed and no trains will be operating.

Substitute buses will be available, including for AFL matches and other major events. These will run with the same frequency as outlined in the timetables but, like regular buses, may get delayed by unexpected traffic conditions or accidents.

We thank you for your patience while the Gawler rail line improvements are being done.

Substitute routes and stops

Substitute bus stops have been set up as close as possible to the Gawler line train stations. Download the substitute bus stop map (PDF, 1685 KB) to see the routes and stops available.

The Gawler Oval and North Adelaide railway stations will not be serviced by substitute buses.

  • GA1 All Stop Service travels from Gawler Central to Adelaide and stops at all substitute bus stops.
  • GA2 Limited Stop Service travels from Gawler to Adelaide and only stops at Gawler Central, Gawler, Smithfield, Elizabeth, Salisbury, Mawson Lakes and Adelaide.
  • GA3 Express Service will only stop at Smithfield, Elizabeth and Adelaide.
  • GA4 Peak Express Service will travel from Gawler to Adelaide without stopping, during the weekday morning and afternoon peak travel periods.

When you're planning your bus trip, look at the different options available as you may be able to link multiple buses to get to where you need to go. For example, if you are travelling from Tambelin to Adelaide, you could catch the GA1 to Smithfield, then the GA3 to Adelaide.

Weekends and public holidays

Car parking

There are some car park closures or changes in place during construction work.

Gawler Central Railway Station

Closed from Monday 1 March 2021.

Please use the Park 'n' Ride car park at the Gawler Railway Station (PDF, 125 KB).

Tambelin Railway Station

Closed from Monday 29 March 2021.

Please use on-street parking on Dawson Road, Evanston Gardens. The nearest bus stop is stop 165 on Dawson Road – see the location on this map (PDF, 54 KB).

Wheelchair, mobility aid and pram passengers

Every effort is made so that all timetabled bus substitute services are accessible for all customers, including the elderly, customers with a disability and those travelling with prams.

If customers find their large mobility device does not fit on an Adelaide Metro bus or coach, it is recommended they contact the Torrens Transit Mile End depot on 8292 8113 to request an accessible taxi. This service is available from train station to train station only and is not a door-to-door service.

Bicycle passengers

Bicycles are not allowed on buses for safety reasons – there is not enough space for people to move around them or anywhere to secure them.
