Gawler Rail Electrification project

When: From Monday 16 March 2020 to Friday 24 April 2020

A range of upcoming closures will take place across the Gawler rail line as part of the Gawler Rail Electrification project.

These closures range from partial service closures to full line closures, as well as late night or ongoing closures - with substitute buses in place.

Check back often, as this page will be updated with upcoming closures as the information becomes available.

Late night only closures - Adelaide to Salisbury 

From mid-March, construction works will be undertaken within the rail corridor between Adelaide Railway Station and Salisbury Interchange, which will require the cancellation of train services from 9pm to last service.

  • Location: Gawler line closed between Adelaide Railway Station and Salisbury Interchange
  • When: Monday 16 March to Thursday 9 April, from 9pm to last service every night, excluding Saturdays
  • Passenger services: Train services will operate the entire Gawler line until 9pm each night. From 9pm train services will then only operate between Salisbury Interchange and Gawler Central station. Substitute buses will then be in place after 9pm to transport passengers between Salisbury Interchange and Adelaide Railway Station.

  • Additional Service: An additional train service will also operate from Salisbury to Gawler Central each night of the closure to ensure that the last substitute bus that departs Adelaide at 11:50pm has a connecting train. The additional substitute bus departs Adelaide at 11:50pm and will connect with the train departing Salisbury at 12:40am.

  • The Substitute Bus (GA1) will operate as closely as possible to the train timetable for the duration of the closure. The bus trips will take approximately 45 minutes.
  • The substitute bus stops will be positioned as close to the Gawler line railway stations as practicable. These stations are outlined in the timetables below.

Wheelchair Passengers

  • All timetabled bus substitute services are accessible for all customers, including the elderly, customers with a disability and those travelling with prams.

Bicycle Passengers

  • Bicycles are not permitted on bus substitute services
 

Two week closure - Adelaide to Salisbury 

From early April, construction works will be undertaken within the rail corridor between Adelaide Railway Station and Salisbury Interchange, which will require the cancellation of train services for a two week period.

  • Location: Gawler line closed between Adelaide Railway Station and Salisbury Interchange.
  • When: Closed from last service Friday 10 April 2020 to last service Friday 24 April 2020. Trains will resume their normal timetabled services Saturday morning 25 April.
  • Passenger services: Train services will operate between Salisbury Interchange and Gawler Central station. Substitute buses will be in place to transport passengers between Salisbury Interchange and Adelaide Railway Station.

Gawler Weekday Train Timetable

Please note: For the duration of the closure the Gawler weekday train timetable will change!

As the Gawler rail line will be shutdown between Adelaide and Salisbury trains will turn back at Salisbury Railway Station, resulting in trains reaching stations at different times. Please see below for the weekday timetable during this time.

April weekend closure - Full Gawler line 

In mid-April, there will be a weekend closure of the full Gawler Line. This has been aligned to occur during the above two week - Adelaide to Salisbury closure to reduce impact to passengers.

  • Location: Entire Gawler line, closed between Adelaide Railway Station and Gawler Central Railway Station.
  • When: From first service Saturday 18 April 2020 until last service Sunday 19 April.
  • Passenger services: All train services will be cancelled. Substitute bus services will operate between Adelaide and Gawler Central station.
