Metrocard the new ticket for Adelaide Metro

Metrocard the new ticket for Adelaide MetroA trial of Adelaide’s new smartcard ticketing system, to be known as Metrocard, will begin later this year, in preparation for full operation of the system on all buses, trains and trams in 2012-2013.

The ticketing system equipment will be trialled on Adelaide Hills bus routes. Metrocard will replace the current Multitrip tickets as they are gradually phased out.

Singletrip and Daytrip tickets will remain as magnetic tickets, with Adelaide uniquely placed to integrate magnetic tickets with Metrocards through new dual purpose validators.Metrocard - validator Existing Metrotickets can also be used with these dual purpose validators.

In time, boarding a bus, train or tram will be a simple matter of touching the Metrocard to a validator as you board. The fare is then deducted from the value stored on the Metrocard.

Metrocards will be able to be ‘topped-up’ or recharged with credit at selected retail outlets, at InfoCentres, vending machines, on trains and trams and online.  An auto-recharge facility will also be available so customers can link their Metrocard to a credit card to allow for automatic reloading.

Metrocard will also offer card protection which will allow a registered card to be cancelled  from the system if it is reported lost or stolen. This facility will allow the value on the lost or stolen card to be transferred to a new card.

The Metrocard system will use technology already operating overseas in Europe, the United States and Canada.
