Have a great day out on the Adelaide O-Bahn & Glenelg Tram
Innovation and Excellence
Reliability and safety are the hallmarks of the Adelaide O-Bahn guided busway. These qualities have been achieved through engineering innovation that allows buses to travel at high speed in complete safety and mechanical excellence that has resulted in very few bus breakdowns.
Special maintenance and recovery vehicles equipped with guide wheels are used for bus recovery and track maintenance. In the event of a mechanical problem, buses travelling the O-Bahn at up to 100km/h can stop in less than two bus lengths.
In the event of tyre damage on the front axle, the wheels are equipped with a metal inner tyre that prevents full deflation, allowing a loaded bus with deflated tyres to be driven up to 16km at a speed of 50km/h.
Engineering innovation excellence also extends to the busway itself, with special consideration given to aesthetics, economy and efficiency throughout the design process. The extensive landscaping along the busway complements the well designed infrastructure.

TRAM FACT FILE
The historic Glenelg Tram line dates back to 1873, when it was set up as a private railway. It came under the control of the South Australian Railways in 1899. Our historic H-type tram carriages carry nearly 2 million people each year.
Destination - The tram line runs from Victoria Square, in the City, to Adelaide’s most popular beachside centre, Glenelg.
Fleet - TransAdelaide operates 21 of the original 30 H-type trams.
Length - Each H-type tram is 16.5 metres in length.
Route - Adelaide’s only operating tram line is 10.8 kilometres in length.
Speed - The trams can travel at speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour.
Capacity - Each H-type tram has the capacity to carry a total of 94 passengers - 64 seated and standing room for another 30. Often during peak periods and other times of heavy passenger loading, coupled sets of two trams are joined and operated together.
Time - The journey between the City and Glenelg takes around 30 minutes.
Power Source - The H-type trams are powered by four 65hp 600 volt DC motors.
In May 2003, Premier Mike Rann and Transport Minister Michael Wright announced a $56 million upgrade for the Glenelg Tram Service.
The upgrade includes eleven articulated air-conditioned light rail vehicles which will be fully accessible, with low floor entry and provision for wheelchairs, environmentally friendly with low noise, negligible local pollutants and aesthetically pleasing designs.
Two of Adelaide’s new trams came into service on Monday 9 January 2006. A total of eleven new trams have been ordered for Adelaide.
